Five-awesome is a format that is currently taking YouTube by storm.

There are many five-awesome channels cropping up, but it is fair to say that the two original channels are currently the most entertaining and most watched.

The format originally pioneered by five-awesome-girls was quickly picked up and given a male spin by five-awesome-guys.

A five-awesome channel involves 5 people with similar interests.
In the case of five-awesomegirls it is five girls who all love musical theater, their biggest love, however, is Harry Potter. Five-awesome-guys interests are a lot broader, they seem to have a love of music, pokemon, and the Internet, in fact they were already youtube users and came together through a love of watching the five-awesome-girls

Each of the 5 have a specific day on which they must post a video. Prehaps Five-awesome-girls describes it better on their youtube channel where they say, ”Basically, there are five of us, and five days in a week if you don’t count Saturday and Sunday, which we don’t, because we’re inherently lazy.

We’re each making 1 video a week for all of 2008 in an attempt to get to know each other better and hopefully exercise our hilariousity. Feel free to join us in this project and subscribe. :)”

Videos involve each member talking about and engaging the audience with what they have been up to during the week.  They also often talk to each other through their videos, thus generating a response from the next person to post a video, and creating a continuous conversation which the audience can follow by watching the next video.

Both five-awesome-girls and five-awesome-guys start their video with a short clip of them talking, the video then goes into a short title sequence introducing the person talking and what day it is. This sets the fast paced style that these five-awesome shows take.

There is a list of unwritten rules that both the girls and guys are supposed to stick to. The 1st  rule was introduced by Hayley in their 3rd video - where each girl must state in every video why “today is awesome.”

Failure to stick to the rules often results in a challenge. For example you must rap the whole of your next video

Another interesting feature the girls and guys often take part in is to theme their videos on a specific subject for the week.

Although the guys started after the girls, they certainly are not behind in views. The guys have two videos with over one million views! The girls and guys videos all generate tens of thousands of hits making them some of the most popular youtubers out there today.

Another interesting note is based on the fact that the guys started after the girls. The boys subscribers currently stands at 26,302 where as the girls have almost 10,000 less subscribers, their subscribers currently stands at 16,307.

With both the girls and boys generating cumulative hits in excess of a million it is apparent that they are the latest group of people to be thrust in to the Micro Fame spotlight. Ultimately it will be the people who watch and comment their shows who will have the  biggest influence as to what happens to them next.
